PROTECT YOUR PC

**********

PHISHING IS ALWAYS IN SEASON
Phishers grow ever more sophisticated. One of the favorite methods of obtaining your personal/financial information is the fake message telling you that your eBay/Amazon/PayPal information has been compromised/expired/must be confirmed. The email will provide a link to a web page where you will be asked to fill in your account information or change your password. Phishers will often create html email and web pages that mimic the look and feel of the legitimate site. The link may look real, but if you mouse over it and look in the status bar of your email client, you will see that it does not point to the ligitimate site. It may have only an ip address, or it may have the site name somewhere in the link, but not the real domain name. A recent phish referring to Amazon contained a link that appeared to be to Amazon.com, but really pointed to mail.american.hu. Another seemed to be a report from a disgruntled eBay user threatening to report the recipient to eBay if his package didn't arrive. That message came not from eBay, but from s001.puredns.nl. If you suspect a communication from an online service may be genuine, visit the website directly through your browser and contact their customer service! ALWAYS ASSUME SUCH COMMUNICATIONS ARE FAKE!!

NOVEMBER VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

In the July through September 2004 issue of HAL-PC Magazine on page 3, bold blue letters read: "HAL-PC MAGAZINE LOOKS GREAT!". There are many contributers and writers. However, one stands out as our November Volunteer of the Month. Beverly Rosenbaum is a 1999 and 2000 Houston Press Club "Excellence in Journalism" award winner and has been a treasured member of HAL-PC since 1988. Most of that time, she has been a contributing editor for HAL-PC Magazine. Beverly's regular columns, "Trumors" and "From the Email Bag" are very popular with readers and they add distinction to the magazine. For all of this, we salute her as our November Volunteer of the Month.
