ADSL Self Install Instructions

If you purchaced an ethernet card from us then please follow the ethernet card and driver instructions before continuing.

Note: The ADSL Self Installation Kit provided to you by HAL-PC is the property of HAL-PC. Please retain all packaging materials and extra equipment in the event that you ever move and DSL isn't available at the new location, or you disconnect your service for whatever reason.

Modem / Filter Installation

ATTENTION: You must filter EVERYTHING that plugs into a telephone jack. By "EVERYTHING", that means ALL Phones, Answering machines, Caller ID boxes, Dial-up modem(s), Satellite receiver(s), Digital Cable receiver(s), Fax machine, Alarm system, EVERYTHING that uses a telephone jack ANYWHERE in your house (including your garage). If you have more than one phone number (ie. 2 separate physical lines) at your home then it only applies to the line the DSL service is on. The DSL service will NOT work and there will be LOUD STATIC on the phones if they are not all filtered properly.

The DSL modem must be plugged into the side of the filter labled "DSL" or plugged directly into the wall jack without a filter.

If you have a telephone on the jack where the DSL modem will be plugged in at then you can connect it as shown below.

In the picture above, the telephone is plugged in on the left side of the filter (picture of a handset) and the DSL modem is on the right (picture of a computer monitor). On all of your other phones you will only use the jack on the filters labeled 'phone'. Make sure that nothing but the DSL modem is plugged into the one labeled 'DSL' as this port is not filtered in any way, doing so will cause noise on those phones and poor DSL performance.

The large wall mount filter (shown above) is for a "hanging" phone, such as those found in most kitchens. Please read the directions on the face of the filter for further instruction.

* The telephone cord (small one on the left) will connect into the port labeled 'DSL'. The ethernet cable (big one on the right) will connect into the port labled '10BASE-T' or 'Ethernet', depending on the model.

NOTE: Your model may look slightly different, so make a note of the size of the plug. They only fit in one place.

* The other end of the ethernet cable will plug into the ethernet card that you installed earlier or the one that came pre-installed in your machine at the time of purchase.

NOTE: If you are connecting more than one computer, then please see home network instructions for more information about setting up a home network and where to connect the DSL modem's ethernet cable.

Once the DSL service has been activated on your line and the modem has been powered on and allowed to complete it's initial 1-2 minute self-test, you should have 2 lights on solid green, the 'Power'/'PWR' and the 'DSL'. The 'DSL' light indicates a strong signal on the phone line. The 'Activity'/'ACT' light will only blink when data is passing over the connection. Once your computer is turned on then the 'Ethernet'/'ENET' (depending on the model of your modem) light will come on. This shows that the DSL modem is properly connected to your computer.

* Time to surf! Once your machine is up, then you should be online. Just open your favorite web program and enjoy! Your email configuration instructions can be found here.

If the DSL light is off or flashing, or the 'Ethernet'/'ENET' light is off, then please double check ALL THE TELEPHONE JACKS IN THE HOUSE where there is something plugged in, and make sure they are filtered properly. Please also see troubleshooting before reporting a problem.
